Chuck Close is a revered American artist who is widely collected by major museums. In the late 1960s, Chuck Close’s realistic and heroically scaled portraits of his family and friends sent shockwaves throughout the art world that are still being felt to this day.

The collector, Jordan D. Schnitzer, says, “Ultimately, I feel an artist’s job is to help us see ourselves and life around us with more clarity. As for me, Chuck Close reminds me to be more patient, understanding, and empathetic, and to realize what you see on the outside is the face of a very complex person—and in Close’s work— you see the portrait and thousands and thousands of characteristics within that portrait.

“There are countless artists today doing portraits– there is only one Chuck Close! Only one with claim to creating thousands of brilliant images within images, within images—a style that is recognized as the work of Chuck Close–that’s his brand. When you stand back from a portrait by Chuck Close, it almost looks like a photo. As you walk closer and closer, you see thousands of portraits forming the greater single portrait. Just like each of us human beings.
