On Friday, December 7th, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) presents an evening of exploring Chesapeake waterfowling with Duck Tales & Traditions. The 6-8pm event will be held in CBMM’s Van Lennep Auditorium and includes a wine reception, followed by decoy demonstrations and talks led by carvers Eric Applegarth and Doug Gibson, and decoy collector and historian Henry Stansbury. Space is limited, with pre-registration needed.
From 6-7pm, participants can explore the historic punt guns and sneak skiffs of the Chesapeake with CBMM Exhibit Specialist Eric Applegarth, while interacting with Bay Hundred native carver Doug Gibson as he creates Bay decoys and shares stories about a lifetime spent hunting in Talbot County’s marshes and creeks.
At 7pm, participants will gather for A Little Chesapeake Waterfowling History, led by CBMM Board Member and program sponsor Henry Stansbury. A highly regarded waterfowling collector and historian, Stansbury will share some serious and not so serious stories about the early days of market and sport hunting in the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Stansbury is the author of Lloyd Tyler, Folk Artist and Decoy Maker, and Ira Hudson and Family, Chincoteague Carvers as well as several articles on waterfowling history. His decoys have been displayed at the Waterfowl Festival for 19 years and can be found in many area museums, including CBMM. Stansbury will have some special decoys to illustrate his talk at the December 7 event.
The cost for the program is $12 for CBMM members, or $15 for non-members, with pre-registration needed by calling 410-745-4941. The program is offered in conjunction with CBMM’s Waterfowling for Beginners workshop, which takes place on Saturday, December 8 and offers practical hands-on waterfowling techniques with information about gunning history, including the tools and tales of outlaw gunners along the Chesapeake.
