Nassau County Museum of Art’s Contemporary Gallery features the work Asad Faulwell and Chris Johanson, two young American artists working in very different styles. The exhibition is on view through June 16, 2013.
Born in Indiana, Asad Faulwell’s intricate mixed-media art focuses on images of Algerian women, especially the freedom fighters who were involved in the 1954-1962 struggle to end French occupation. They are shown against highly-decorative floral and geometric patterns familiar in Middle Eastern art. His solo exhibitions have been at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas and the Kravets/Wehby Gallery in New York City. Los Angeles’ Selwyn Fine Art featured Faulwell in a two-person exhibition with Matt Lipps. Some of his group exhibitions have been at the University Art Museum in Long Beach, California, the Josh Lilley Gallery in London. Lawrie Shabibi Gallery in Dubai, Beacon Arts in Inglewood, California, and The Guild and CUE Art Foundation, both in New York City.
California-born Chris Johanson was part of a community of artists in San Francisco’s Mission District. He gained attention in the 2001 Whitney Biennial and has since been widely exhibited in this country and abroad. Johanson employs an exuberant color palette for simple and imperfect geometric shapes. Artforum wrote: “Johanson’s rough-hewn cartoon style taps a realist vein, documenting his peculiar, late-new age, Northern California milieu, home of Wavy Gravy, Alan Watts, and Steve Jobs.” Johanson has had solo exhibitions at the Portland Art Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and UCLA Hammer Museum. He work has been seen in group exhibitions in this country and in Glasgow, Berlin, and Istanbul.
Nassau County Museum of Art is located at One Museum Drive in Roslyn Harbor, NY.
