The Museum’s Electra is one of only two in existence, and the only one with the same modifications made to Earhart’s plane-and flown around the world in 1997 on the 60th anniversary of Earhart’s global flight attempt. The aircraft will remain on permanent display. “In Search of Amelia Earhart” will be on exhibit until April 28, 2014, and is free with admission to the Museum.

Aircraft Moving Day – Installation of the Lockheed Electra into the Museum

To make room for two more aircraft in the Golden Age of Aviation exhibit, one plane will be permanently relocated to the Museum’s Restoration Center, and at least four aircraft will have to be moved outdoors temporarily while the new planes are moved indoors. While full access to the gallery will be restricted throughout the day, all of the aircraft and activity will be on view for Museum visitors.

The World War II-era Super Corsair fighter will be moved out of its corner spot in the gallery to a new home at the Museum’s Restoration Center. Replacing it will be a 1935 Lockheed Model 10-E Electra transport (centerpiece of the new Amelia Earhart exhibit), and joining the Electra in the gallery’s row of Golden Age of Aviation aircraft will be the world’s only Stinson Model O.
