DOYLESTOWN, PA– The Michener Art Museum’s Gift of Giving XII will take place in the Education Gallery November 17 through December 10. This annual celebration presents a selection of two and three-dimensional art work created by New Hope Solebury School District students. An opening reception will be November 17 from 2 to 4 pm with refreshments and art activities for the whole family; admission is free.
In his second novel, The Fires of Spring, Pulitzer Prize-winning author James A. Michener wrote: “(children) are not born citizens… (They) grow to citizenship. They earn it…by love, work, and a passion for things better then they are…”
“Children become members of their community in stages,” says Susan Sherman, Education Gallery Coordinator. “Their awareness grows from self to include family, friends, school, the community, and finally the world. This awareness is developed layer by layer, over time.”
The Michener Art Museum encourages this expanding development not only by exhibiting art that reflects diversity and the times, but by being an educational resource for youth.
December is National AIDS Awareness Month, and the Michener Art Museum Education Gallery has taken this opportunity to highlight community awareness about HIV/AIDS, and to provide a way for young people to respond. The Gift of Giving exhibition is based on a parallel exhibit in Philadelphia, Kids Care, in which children create works of art that are displayed, and then given to people in their community affected by HIV/AIDS. The Gift of Giving exhibition continues this idea, featuring work that has been created and donated by students from the New Hope-Solebury School District.
At the close of the exhibition all works will be gift wrapped and delivered to Trinity Episcopal Church, to be distributed to area residents who are affected by HIV/AIDS. This exhibition will be on view during the Michener’s Holiday Open House, December 10.
