Science Museum and Touch Press announce Journeys of Invention iPad app

The Science Museum London in partnership with Touch Press have released Journeys of Invention, an iPad app featuring over 80 extraordinary objects from the Science Museum’s extensive collection. Available exclusively for iPad, the app takes you on 14 interactive journeys of scientific invention and discovery created by the Science Museum’s curators.

Journeys of Invention iPadJourneys of Invention enables users to study, rotate and even operate some of the greatest scientific inventions of all time. Step inside the Apollo 10 Command Module, examine a flea with Robert Hooke’s 17th-century microscope, or even encode and send messages with a World War II Enigma Machine.

Organised into 14 curated stories, Journeys of Invention explores centuries of creativity and scientific discovery. Two of the journeys are offered for free, enabling people to interact with some of the rich experience available in the full version. The ‘Connected’ journey traces how technology, from steam engines to the iPad, has brought us closer together. ‘New Science’ explores the birth of modern science, inviting you to peer through Hooke’s microscope at a flea, nettle and needle, comparing what you see with Hooke’s original drawings.

The app has been produced in partnership with Touch Press, creators of Apple’s 2013 iPad app of the year, Disney Animated. Theo Gray, Chief Creative Officer, Touch Press said: “Science is a journey of discovery through time and space, and so is this app. It shows you the connections between eighty of the most fascinating objects in one of the world’s great science museums, providing enlightenment and amusement in equal measure.”

Journeys of Invention has been specially written by Science Museum curators, with each extraordinary object accompanied by a rich collection of historic photographs, rarely seen contemporary artworks, archive film footage or video. The app includes the following features:

Over 80 extraordinary, interactive objects from the Science Museum’s collections
Developed for Retina Display
Designed for iPad 2 and above
The first journey, entitled ‘Connected’ is available for free in the Journeys of Invention app, with a further journey, ‘New Science’, unlocked when users connect with Facebook (or via email).

Journeys of Invention is available to download worldwide from the App Store. Two journeys (Connected and New Science) are available for free, with 12 further journeys available via an in-App purchase of £6.99 ($9.99).
