19th century sailor’s life explored at CBMM July 11

Join the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St. Michaels, MD, on July 11 as historians Matthew and Juliann Krogh present two living history programs exploring the highlights and challenges of a sailor’s life during the early 19th century.

From 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, July 11, the “It’s a Sailor’s Life for Me!” family program engages all ages by creating an interactive learning experience that takes participants back in time to 1812 and revisits the adventures experienced by British and American sailors. Families will hear true tales of mariners as they interact with visitors from the past.

Also on Friday, July 11 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., “Marlinspike Sailors and Courageous Cuttermen: American Mariners in the War of 1812,” invites participants to revisit the skill and bravery of sailors who served in America’s maritime armed services. The program will focus on shipboard life in the Revenue Cutter Service and U.S. Navy while showcasing shipbuilding, uniforms, food, navigation, rope work, small arms, medicine, games, and sailing terms. The program also explores the sea battles and leaders that impacted the War of 1812, which started over free trade and sailors’ rights.

With more than 10 years’ experience reenacting the Colonial Period, the War of 1812, and the Civil War, Matthew and Juliann Krogh volunteer as part of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Historic Ships Company, a unit designed to honor and portray the mission of the Coast Guard with respect to the War of 1812 bicentennial.

Both presentations take place in CBMM’s Van Lennep Auditorium. The “It’s a Sailor’s Life for Me!” morning program is $5 for CBMM members, and $10 for non-members. The “Marlinspike Sailors and Courageous Cuttermen” evening program is $10 for CBMM members, or $15 for non-members. Seating is limited with pre-registration needed by calling 410-745-4941.
