The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Md. was recently honored at the annual Maryland Tourism Awards Ceremony of the 37th Annual Maryland Tourism & Travel Summit. Held November 8-10 at the newly opened The Hotel at The University of Maryland, the summit was sponsored and managed by the Maryland Tourism Coalition, and drew together hundreds of the state’s top tourism industry professionals.
CBMM received an award for the “Best Media and Public Relations Campaign” for its strategic use of digital storytelling that successfully widened the public and media audiences for the restoration of the 1889 log-hull bugeye Edna Lockwood. The multi-faceted communications plan concentrated on video and social media to expand and diversify audience demographics, helping to not only preserve a National Historic Landmark, but attract more guests, journalists, and members to the museum. The fully restored Edna Lockwood will re-launch at CBMM’s OysterFest on October 27, 2018, with restoration progress reports updated at ednalockwood.org.
“I’m thrilled one of Talbot’s most beloved destinations has achieved this award,” said Talbot County Director of Economic Development and Tourism Cassandra Vanhooser. “The publicity behind the Edna Lockwood project has helped Talbot County attract more visitors and journalists in sharing our stories.”
Considerations for award nominations included innovative features of the campaign, specific results, and the collaboration involved in executing the project.
