Tom Tom Magazine & Mindy Abovitz Present The Oral History of Female Drummers
3pm
This performance features six female drummers spread throughout MoMA PS1′s floors, engaging in a call and response. The beats are passed from drummer to drummer via a beatboxer, who visits each woman and reinterprets her respective beat. The performers play on painted drumheads with sticks by the artist Itta. As they are used in the performance, the sticks gradually “chip away” at their own histories.
SUNDAY SESSIONS PRESENTS NEW WORK BY TRAJAL HARRELL AND THE LAUNCH OF ANDRÉ LEPECKI’S ANTHOLOGY, DANCE
Sunday, January 13, 12–6pm
Trajal Harrell
Judson Church Is Ringing in Harlem (Made-to-Measure)/Twenty Looks or Paris Is Burning at The Judson Church (M2M)
3pm
Judson Church Is Ringing in Harlem…(M2M) is a custom-sized iteration of Trajal Harrell’s Twenty Looks or Paris Is Burning at the Judson Church project. Only, in this made-to-measure size, the proposition is inverted and the central question of the work becomes, “What would have happened if one of the early postmoderns from Judson Church had gone uptown to perform in the voguing ballroom scene in Harlem?”
Panel Discussion with Mårten Spångberg, Jenn Joy, André Lepecki, Trajal Harrell, and Peter Eleey on the Occasion of the Launch of DANCE, Edited by André Lepecki
4pm
Given the firm establishment of dance as a major force in contemporary art, as well as dance’s presence in major museums across the world over the past couple of years, MoMA PS1 presents an afternoon of lectures and conversations about dance in the art world.
WINTER OPEN HOUSE/SUNDAY SESSIONS WITH CYPRIEN GAILLARD AND ED ATKINS
Sunday, January 20, 12–6pm
Depression, A Performance by Ed Atkins
3pm
In conjunction with the opening of his exhibition at MoMA PS1, Ed Atkins presents the performance piece Depression, which explores death, bodies, and disintegrating matter. Known for high-definition videos that defy standard narrative conventions, Atkins works with filmic and text-based forms in technological transition. For Atkins, HD images are otherworldly; since they are not tied to any physical medium, he considers the technology deathlike, a bodiless movie format.
Cyprien Gaillard Presents Egyptian Lover and Special Guests
4pm
On the occasion of the opening of his first New York solo show, Cyprien Gaillard inhabits MoMA PS1′s geodesic dome to present a program by West Coast rap pioneer Egyptian Lover and special guests performing in front of selected video footage. Combining elements of the found, the photographic, the cinematic, the architectural, and the social, Gaillard provokes visual or associative connections between ancient ruins and neglected contemporary spaces, acting as a kind of archaeologist of contemporary history.
