Chrysler Museum of Art opens The Allure of Ancient Egypt an exhibition on view AUG 17, 2013.
This selection of hand-carved hieroglyphs, jewelry, funerary sculptures, not to mention photographs and paintings of the great monuments, shows us why ancient Egypt has inspired artists since the time of the pharaohs.
The exhibition will include programming for children over the summer including a Second- Saturday Family Day on July 13 from noon to 3 p.m. Children and families can learn what every mummy needed to know to survive in the ancient Egyptian underworld and will make a pyramid treasure box to take home. The Family Day is free and open to the public.
The Museum’s education department has also planned a summer arts camp for kids, Act Like An Egyptian, to be held at Christ and St. Luke’s Church in Norfolk. There will be two sessions: July 15 to 19 for ages seven to nine, and July 22 to 26 for ages 10 to 13. The camp is a partnership with the Virginia Stage Company, and campers will create an original play with costumes, scenery, and props to perform on the last day. Reservations are $175 for Members, $275 for all others and details are available at Chrysler.org.
