Museum Center and Public Library take the lead on helping get kids excited to read
CINCINNATI – Want to share your love of reading but need an excuse? How about a birthday celebration for Dr. Seuss? What better way to beat the chill of winter than to spend the day at Cincinnati Museum Center. This Saturday, join us for a reading event and make your friends who missed it jealous you went.
Read Across America is a day-long event that motivates kids to read and helps give parents and children the resources to encourage kids to read the other 364 days of the year. The Duke Energy Children’s Museum at Cincinnati Museum Center will host a variety of activities to get kids and adults into reading with the help of guests from around the community.
The Public Library of Hamilton County and Cincinnati will have several programs in the lobby all day, but the real fun starts once you’re inside the Duke Energy Children’s Museum. The Public Library will be hosting story times every half hour between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Adopt-a-Book will be onsite to share information about their program and promote the Children’s Museum as a new drop-off site for books. Adopt-a-Book is a program started by 9-year old twins and 2012 Difference Makers Alex and Hannah who wanted to provide disadvantaged kids with books of their own.
If you’re looking to share your love of reading with others, you’ll have an opportunity to share “tails” of fun and adventure by reading to a therapy dog. At 3 p.m., local author Ashley Scribner will share a story of her own by reading her book Findlay: A Cincinnati Pig Tale. Joel the Singing Librarian will also be performing his fun songs at 3:30, so sing along and get up and dance as we celebrate all that reading has to offer.
And for those kids with a valid library card, they can get one free child ticket to the Duke Energy Children’s Museum with a paid adult on March 1. Don’t have a current library card? No problem! The Public Library will also be helping kids sign up for their very own library card all day.
So grab your shoes and beat the winter blues. Stop by the children’s museum lobby to make reading your new hobby. Then come inside and let books take you on a ride as we celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday in a very special way. This Saturday, find your way to reading elation at Cincinnati Museum Center’s Read Across America Seussabration.
