Robbi Hall Kumalo, or Robbi K, as she is known, started in the music business singing with a host of legendary artists including Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Eileen Ivers, Arif Mardin, Jewel, Diana Ross, Rod Stewart, Mary J. Blige, and Harry Belafonte. She will be joined by her husband, South African bassist Bakithi Kumalo, a Grammy Award-winning bassist, composer, and vocalist. He first came to the attention of the American public in 1986 following the release of Paul Simon’s epochal “Graceland” album, where his precise and sinuous bass lines thundered out a death-knell for apartheid and made critics around the world sit up and take notice. Bakithi possesses a unique musical style reflecting influences from around the world, including South African traditional folk, contemporary jazz, salsa, and electronica.

“Robbi has a larger-than-life stage presence, an enticingly beautiful voice and incredible energy,” noted the Michener Art Museum’s Director of Programs Zoriana Siokalo. “She makes a spirit-filled connection with her audience, and everyone in the room participates in the joy of the music. We are so pleased to bring her talents to the Michener.”
