Salt Lake City – The Salt Lake Gallery Stroll and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA) are hosting a pre-Gallery Stroll event Friday, November 21, to celebrate the UMFA’s New Narratives: Recent Work by University of Utah Art Faculty, now on view. The Gallery Stroll, a monthly highlight of the city’s thriving local art scene, is 6-9 pm Friday; from 4-6 pm, admission is free to the UMFA. Visitors can meet some of the faculty artists in person, learn about their work in informal conversation and enjoy free hot chocolate in the Museum Café before heading to downtown galleries.
Kristina Robb, director of the Salt Lake Gallery Stroll, says the event kicks off a year-long partnership between the Gallery Stroll and the UMFA, the state’s premier destination for global visual arts. “This is a great opportunity for local art lovers to meet some of the nationally and internationally known U artists who contribute to our arts community through both their art-making and their teaching,” Robb says. “It’s a fun way to start off a festive night reveling in the Salt Lake arts scene on the eve of the holiday season.”
Several faculty artists will be in the UMFA galleries for the event, including Beth Krensky, Stefanie Dykes, Simon Blundell, Laurel Caryn, John Erickson, Tom Hoffman and Lewis J. Crawford. New Narratives, on view through January 11, 2015,features 66 objects from 31 faculty artists in a wide array of mediums, including painting, photography, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture and new media.The exhibition was guest curated by Katie Lee Koven, director of the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art at Utah State University, and is supported by the University of Utah College of Fine Arts and the Department of Art and Art History.
The Salt Lake Gallery Stroll is committed to bringing the value of visual art to the forefront of Salt Lake City’s cultural identity through a free public event on the third Friday of each month (the first Friday in December).
