Salt Lake City – The Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA) will observe the 25th annual Day With(out) Art on Tuesday, December 2, 2014, by covering up part of the recently completed Tony Feher installation in the Museum’s G. W. Anderson Great Hall.
Day With(out) Art began on December 1, 1989, as a national day of action and mourning in response to the AIDS crisis. The name is a metaphor for the frightening possibility of a future day without art or artists and is meant to highlight proactive art programming and artists living with HIV/AIDS around the world.
The Museum is closed on the official Day With(out) Art, Monday, December 1, and will participate instead on Tuesday, December 2, from 10 am to 5 pm.
The window component of Tony Feher’s They arrived yesterday, dusty and weary, but in good spirits, will be hidden by a black curtain. “By not allowing our visitors to see Tony Feher’s stunning window installation on Day With(out) Art, the UMFA hopes to call attention to the loss of lives to HIV and AIDS and the worldwide humanitarian efforts to alleviate suffering caused by the disease,” said Whitney Tassie, curator of modern and contemporary art at the UMFA.
