British Airways pilot and writer Mark Vanhoenacker reminds us of the true wonder of flight in his fascinating and poetic new book, “Skyfaring- A Journey with a Pilot.”The author weaves together history, politics, geography, meteorology, ecology, physics, and philosophical reflection and offers an his view of the world as a pilot-demystifying the cockpit, humanizing the crew, and conveying the experience of freedom, wonder, and discovery that can only be found in the air. Vanhoenacker will share his inspiring perspective during this evening presentation at the University Bookstore.

World War II Aircraft Fly-in and Public Program:
Warplanes to Siberia
Three World War II-era military training aircraft will fly to the Museum for public display on Saturday, July 11. The North American AT-6 airplanes will be flown to Russia this summer by the BRAVO 369 Flight Foundation, tracing the Alaskan-Siberian military air route from Montana to Russia during World War II. The 6,000-mile route was part of the massive U.S. Lend-Lease program during the War. At 2 p.m. in the Museum, BRAVO 369 leaders will conduct a presentation about the Lend-Lease Program and their upcoming flight.

The Mars Science Laboratory – Searching for Ancient Martian Habitats
Steve Lee was a member of the NASA Jet Propulsion Team that successfully landed the Curiosity rover on Mars in 2012. Lee is currently the lead for Curiosity strategic mission planning at NASA JPL.On July 12 he will give an insiders look at the risky flight to the Red Planet, and share some
of the beautiful images, discoveries and surprises the famous rover has sent home. Lee will also give an informal update on the Mars mission at 1 p.m. in the Charles Simonyi Space Gallery.

The Museum of Flight celebrates the 99th anniversary of the founding of the Boeing Company, with a daylong celebration of this aerospace giant’s rich history. Admission is free for Boeing employees (with up to 6 guests). Boeing ID is required

A special preview and signing of Russ Banham’s book “Higher: 100 Years of Boeing” is scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the T.A. Wilson Great Gallery.
World War I Aviation Symposium:
“Fokker Scourge”
At 2 p.m. The Museum of Flight, in conjunction with the Northwest Chapter of the Friends of the American Fighter Aces, will host a 2-hour symposium focusing on the early innovations in fighter aircraft design during the First World War. The panelists at the “Fokker Scourge Symposium” are renowned authors in World War I aviation history, Greg VanWyngarden, Jack Herris, and Lance Bronnenkant. The event is free with admission to the Museum. The authors’books will be available at the Museum Store, with book signings at the symposium.

Plutopalooza
On July 19, the Museum celebrates one of the longest journeys in spaceflight history, as NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft arrives at Pluto after a 9-year trip through the solar system. This 2 p.m. presentation will look at the probe’s wealth of discoveries about the distant, dwarf planet. Extreme Space Medicine
NASA flight surgeon Dr. David P. Reyes, MD, tells how medicine is conducted in the most extreme environments, and what medical capabilities are required for upcoming missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond. Dr. Reyes helps clear NASA astronauts for spaceflight, and has supported NASA operations in the Arctic, Antarctic and Star City, Russia.
Dr. Reyes will also field questions and deliver an informal talk in the Alaska Airlines Aerospace Education Center from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Blue Angels Airshow Practice and Jet Blast Bash
The U.S. Navy Blue Angeles return to Seattle for Seafair, and home base is Museum. It’s best place to see them up-close during July 30-31 airshow practice sessions. And during Seafair weekend, enjoy the Blues all of the airshow planes in a festival setting with the Museum’s Jet Blast Bash.

Jet Blast Bash
The Museum celebrates Seafair weekend Aug. 1-2 with Jet Blast Bash, an outdoor family festival right on the Blue Angels’flight line. The festival offers live music, food by McCormick and Schmick’s, a beer garden, historic Navy airplanes, and the best seats in town for the Blue Angels’ thunderous takeoffs and dramatic landings. Inside of the Museum, legendary SR-71 Blackbird pilot Brian Shul returns with his popular presentations, and there will be even more activities for children. All events are free with admission to the Museum.
