Experience the richness of African American culture at the Cincinnati Museum Center

CINCINNATI – Celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the richness of African American culture during Cincinnati Museum Center’s Celebrate the Dream event Monday, January 18.

richness of African American cultureThe African American community has made a tremendous impact in American culture and society for over three centuries. From music and literature to food and medicine, African Americans have shaped American culture in ways many of us take for granted. Celebrate the Dream is a celebration of that culture, shining the spotlight on a group that has influenced and enhanced our nation’s culture.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. used the power of African American storytelling, peaceful protest and spiritualism to advocate for change, inspiring a nation to do better. His iconic “I Have a Dream” speech is one of the most recognizable appeals for equality and remains a powerful reminder of the common interests, rights and beliefs we share as a nation regardless of race, gender, social class or economic standing. A big step in making Dr. King’s dream a reality is a better understanding of each other’s culture.

Cincinnati Museum Center’s Celebrate the Dream event brings Dr. King’s message to life by presenting African American culture in all its vibrant, familiar and stirring glory. Immerse yourself in the rhythm of the drums and sample the rich goods and decadent foods of African American culture as the Rotunda is transformed into a bustling African marketplace. Vendors from across the community will display a wide array of authentic goods including home décor, cobbler pies, gourmet coffee, jewelry, sandals and art.

Enjoy a variety of musical, dance and spoken word performances from community groups. Experience the power of African storytelling. Witness the grace and strength of African dance accompanied by the rhythm of the drums. Sing and clap along to a performance of African-inspired music and songs that celebrate positive self-expression, dreaming and creativity. Feel yourself moved by a poetry slam featuring local poets.

But don’t just sit there, get involved! Speak with Tuskegee Airmen and learn about the living legacy of these men who overcame segregation and prejudice to become one of the most highly-respected fighter groups of World War II. Create your very own quilting square as you learn about the history of quilting and its power to tell stories. And find your rhythm as you beat the drum and learn why drums are so important in African American culture.
