Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum hosts Volunteer Friendraiser February 16

In seeking friendly, outgoing lovers of the Chesapeake to join their dynamic docent team, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is inviting active adults with a passion for learning to a Volunteer Friendraiser at its waterfront campus in St. Michaels, Md. on Thursday, February 16. The event is free, with limited seating and advanced registration needed.

Beginning at 4:00 p.m. in CBMM’s Van Lennep Auditorium, the Volunteer Friendraiser includes complimentary refreshments and the opportunity for prospective volunteers to learn more about docent volunteering opportunities, with emphasis on interpretive programs, public and school group tours, and training. Current docent volunteers and staff will be on hand to answer questions during the event.

“The best way to convey the joy of guiding tours is by introducing new folks to our current docents,” said Director of Education & Associate Curator Kate Livie. “We’re excited to expand our incredible community of volunteer interpreters. No experience is necessary to be a guide—just an enthusiasm for the Chesapeake, an excitement for working with the public of all ages, and the gift of gab.”

Volunteers play an essential role in the mission of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, which draws more than 75,000 annual guests to its 18-acre campus and educational programming. In addition to fellowship, training, and enrichment trips, docent volunteers also enjoy special events and socials throughout the year, an annual recognition reception, library privileges, discounts in the Museum Store, and more.

“Each spring, thousands of school children come to experience the Chesapeake with us, and as those programs grow, so does the need for docent volunteers,” said CBMM Volunteer & Education Coordinator Allison Speight.’It’s not just a great way to make a difference, it’s also a great way to make a few new friends.”
