Program Offers Volunteering Opportunities to Ninth through Eleventh Grade Students
CINCINNATI, OH – The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center has announced applications are being accepted from high school students from ninth to eleventh graders to participate in the Youth Docent program. Students have until October 6 to submit applications. This program is sponsored by the Cincinnati Chapter of the Links, Incorporated.
The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is looking for students who exhibit passion for the importance of African American History and believes in the Freedom Center’s core values of cooperation, courage, and perseverance in the pursuit for equality designed for all people. After application submissions, selected students will interview with a panel and commit to participate in two-hour training sessions on the first three Saturdays of each month from December 2017 through May 2018. Each session focuses on three phases of the Freedom Center’s history that incorporates dialogue, inquiry, and readings and the importance of relationships and cultures that draw from the past and contemporary times through understanding the significance of all people and their contributions. After completion of historical components, students will volunteer at National Underground Railroad Freedom Center from May, 2018 through August, 2018.
“We are excited to welcome to the next generation of students who will help carry on the mission of our great institution,” says Tara Riley, Interim Director of Museum Experiences at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. “It is becoming increasingly important we train these students today to carry the legacy of freedom.”

Applications are being accepted through October 6, 2017. Interviews will be conducted from October 9 through October 16, 2017 with applicants being selected on October 27.
