Bonniers Konsthall announces collaboration with Tarek Atoui, Vitamin Creative Space and EMS (Electronic Music Studio).

Bonniers Konsthall is proud to announce the beginning of an extended collaboration with acclaimed sound artist Tarek Atoui, Vitamin Creative Space and EMS (Electronic Music Studio).

Un-drum 2: The Chinese Connection. Performance as part of the exhibition Disorientation II, Saadiat Island, Abu Dhabi, 2009

This unique collaboration has arisen by way of Bonniers Konsthall’s exhibition More Than Sound, centered on the use and composition of music within contemporary artistic practices, but will move beyond it as a unique element and conceive a new development of those energies within the global context. For this project Atoui will consider the construction of instruments that take existing archives as sound sources and transform them into a multitude of samples and fragments, which will be used to create new pieces and sounds. Atoui’s technique will re-visit the concept of sampling in a manner that electronic music, hip hop and other musical genres have yet to define. As a means of generating a dynamic exchange of knowledge, research, experiments and concepts between institutions, the project will engage a multitude of artists, sound engineers and musicians both in Sweden and China, who, together with Atoui, will produce new and different outcomes which will reflect both its musical and spiritual qualities, and amplify the perception of space and time throughout the duration of the collaboration, as well as beyond its completion.

Atoui’s recent performance at Bonniers Konsthall on November 25th, 2012 marked the beginning of a dynamic collaboration that will soon manifest itself in Guangzhou, China, where additional research, workshops and performances will take place. Throughout 2013, numerous performances will take place at Bonniers Konsthall and Vitamin Creative Space.

Tarek Atoui was born in Lebanon in 1980 and moved to Paris in 1998, where he studied contemporary and electronic music at the French National Conservatory of Reims. Today Atoui works within the realm of sound performance and articulates composition, physicality and engineering in complex and inventive ways. He specializes in creating tools for interdisciplinary art forms and education, such as his pioneering youth workshop Empty Cans presented in France, Holland, Lebanon, Egypt, and New York, as part of his Museum as Hub residency at the New Museum. Recent productions and performances also include dOCUMENTA (13) and the Serpentine Gallery’s Memory Marathon.
